Love Each Other. Plan Your Money.

You’re building a life together—sharing a home, a future, and a thousand daily decisions. But when it comes to money, even the strongest couples can feel unsure, unprepared, or quietly anxious.

  • How do you combine finances without losing independence?

  • What should you merge, and what should you keep separate?

  • How do you make those choices without damaging trust or intimacy?

This practical guide walks couples through merging finances and the real financial conversations and systems that shape a lasting partnership. Designed to be used alongside accompanying worksheets, the book invites you and your partner to explore your money histories, confirm your values, and design a financial system that reflects both of you—not just spreadsheets and rules.

From wedding planning and pre-nups to uneven starting points, taxes, insurance, and long-term planning, this book shows you how to build a shared financial life while staying aligned, respectful, and connected. It’s not about perfection or one “right” way—it’s about creating a money strategy that supports your relationship instead of stressing it.

From this financial planner, you’ll learn how to

  • Talk openly about money without fighting or avoiding it

  • Decide which accounts to combine—and which to keep separate

  • Navigate prenups, assets, and unequal starting points

  • Plan for weddings, homes, children, and major life changes

  • Build cash flow, tax, insurance, and estate strategies together

Author Long Bio

Sarah Sprague Gerber, CFP®, AFC® is the founder of and principal financial planner at Momentum Financial Planning LLC. Her mission is to help get all early- to mid- career individuals and couples started on the right foot financially. She believes that the financial decisions made early on in a relationship strongly affect financial outcomes later in life, and she wants to make sure that everyone in this position has access to professional financial advice.

Sarah found her way to personal finance through quite a zig- zag route. She received her chemical- biological engineering and biology degree from MIT and had never yet taken a personal finance class. When she started her first job after graduation, she had over $70,000 in student loans and had to figure out her own finances.

This journey led her to the Survey of Personal Financial Planning class at UC Berkeley Extension where she quickly realized that others also had the same personal finance questions she did. Still working full-time in product management for a fintech company in San Francisco, she fully paid off her own student loans in 2016 and completed UC Berkeley Extension’s Personal Financial Planning program in 2018.

Once she became engaged to Justin, she realized the customary financial advice world had overlooked the challenges of merging money and marriage when two people plan to marry or live together. She plunged ahead with planning a wedding, getting married, and starting her new financial planning and coaching firm Momentum during those wild, fun, and crazy times.

She has since received her AFC® designation in 2020 and CFP® designation in 2022 and now aims to be the financial planner that she wished she had found. And about that degree in engineering, she’s no longer creating drug- release contact lenses or designing chemical distillation systems, but today she is helping couples successfully engineer their money and marriages.

Sarah lives in Longmont, Colorado with her husband and children.
